The Aranmula Uthrittathi Boat Race has carved a distinct niche for itself in the cultural imaginings of Kerala. The boat race is held annually as an offering to Lord Parthasarathy, the presiding deity of the Parthasarathy temple at Aranmula on the Uthrittathi asterism (as per the local Malayalam calendar) during the Onam festival. Teeming with rich tradition the Aranmula boat race is considered more of a ritual than a race.
Aranmula Boat Race features Palliyodams, Aranmula’s unique snake boats. Regarded as the divine vessel of the deity, Palliyodam is unique in its shape that only the amidship portion of the boat touches the water. The event adorns the myriad facets of River Pamba making her all the more elegant. The rhythmic and the synchronized way of rowing the majestic boats make it a rare spectacle.
